For many of us, there are several things that we know we want to change. Maybe it’s to start doing something, or to stop doing something, or perhaps it’s to do something better. Whatever it is, the key to any of these changes is persistence, since it’s through repetition that these changes become habitual.
And the key to persistence is focus.
Instead of trying to do everything all at once, it’s best to focus on one thing to start. Pick one thing you want to start doing, or stop doing, or change, or whatever, and focus on that one thing to the exclusion of all the other things you’d also like to change. The goal is to work on this one thing day in and day out till it becomes a habit, doing little actions on a daily basis that help reinforce this change.
If we try to change everything all at once–to start doing this, and to stop doing that, and to change this–we often struggle to make any of the changes last. Far better to choose one thing, and stick with it until it becomes a part of my life, than to try to focus on half a dozen things and not see any of them stick.
There will be time for those other things, but for now choose to focus on one.
