Although we’ve probably all heard the saying “Winners never quit, and quitters never win,” is this actually good advice?

I think we’d all agree that there are times where quitting is actually a great thing. If a friend wants to quit smoking, we wouldn’t try to talk them out of it because, “winners never quit.” Of course not. Why? Because the wisdom of quitting is tied directly to what we are giving up.

If we’re giving up long-term benefits because of short-term discomfort, it’s in our best interest not to quit. But if give up something that is actually harming us, or stealing our time and energy from things that are more important, than quitting can be a great idea.  If we’re never willing to quit these kinds of things, we may also fail to succeed in other areas that matter even more.

Quitting isn’t the problem; it’s knowing what and when to quit.
