My children have taught me a lot. Recently, the thing that has stood out has been their ability to enthusiastically do the same activity over and over without losing that initial sense of joy and excitement. Whether it be running in circles around the house, or reading the same story over and over, they are able to actively engage in the present activity, even if they’ve done the same thing a hundred times before.

Granted, they are still young, and unfortunately this ability tends to wane with age. For whatever reason, it seems that as we get older we often start to lose this ability to live in the moment. Instead, it can become easier and easier to get bored or preoccupied, even in the midst of activities and conversations that at one time would have brought us great joy.

I’m not sure why this happens, but I am glad that my children have given me a glimpse of this precious ability that can easily be lost with age.
