Sometimes we can have a picture in our head of how we think we’d like life to be. But if we were to get our wish, and everything external to us were to change instantly into this ‘ideal’ world, would we able to deal with if?
Most people would say,”Of course, I could handle a perfect life.” But consider this: If you suddenly had wealth or fame or power—or that certain job or specific opportunity—would you be able to handle it? Would you be able to take on the responsibility and requirements that those things would require of you?
It’s easy to focus on the external things we would like to have, and to forget about the habits and character that would be necessary to effectively handle those things. So the question is, are we becoming the kind of people who could responsibly handle those kinds of opportunities? Would the habits and character we’ve already formed make doing so an easy transition, or an overwhelming ordeal?
Or put another way, does the kind of person I’m becoming match up with the kind of life I say I’d like to live?
