Last night, as our city continued its 150th birthday celebration, Ben Folds performed with our local symphony orchestra. Towards the end of the show, he made some comments about the orchestra and the value groups like theirs bring to cities like ours.

One thing they do is they showcase what it means to work together. It is a total group effort. There could be over 100 individuals, and yet there are no prima donnas. Each person has devoted time and energy to learn his instrument and his part, and when all of these individuals come together, the end product is greater the just the sum of its parts.

And Folds was right—it was a beautiful illustration of the power of unity and working together. Imagine what it would look like if our cities, businesses, congregations, even our nation, worked together with the same kind of dedication and unity that we see in groups like the local orchestra. Because when people work together for something bigger than themselves, they can end up accomplishing far more than they could alone.
