How do you feel when what you receive goes far beyond what you had expected? For me, there’s a certain elation and delight that it brings. I’ve also noticed that it affects my perception of the one who delivers this unexpected surprise.
Few would argue that we enjoy it when this happens to us. So what would happen if we were intentional about providing the same experience to those we’re around? Not only would they be able to experience the delight that comes from exceeded expectations, but it could also build goodwill in the relationship, whether it be at work, home, or in the neighborhood.
But doing so isn’t easy. Going the extra mile to make sure we go beyond expectations can be difficult and easy to overlook. Yet, regularly choosing to deliver more than expected can itself become a habit, both in the individual and group context. This habit can not only help us produce work we can be proud of, but will also create delightful surprises for those on receiving end—moments they may not soon forget.
