One of the benefits of taking time to be still is we’re confronted with the reality that we are more than what we do, build, or accomplish.
There will comes times when physically, or intellectually, or emotionally, we won’t be able to produce. But if we already understand that our identity is deeper than what we do, we’ll be able to live through these time with greater peace.
This isn’t to say that our actions don’t matter—they do. They have the capacity to shape who we become in the future, as well as give evidence to who we are in the present. But they, in themselves, do not define us. We are more than our successes and failures, and we do not have to strive to justify our existence.
And it’s in stillness—in intentionally ceasing to do and being content to simply be—we can come to better understand this.
