When we take a break from something we’re accustomed to—a food or drink, a routine, a form of entertainment, etc.—there are a couple things we might learn.
We might learn we’ve grown dependent on it in ways we didn’t realize, and soon we’re suffering from withdrawal. Or, after a while, we may realize that it isn’t quite as essential as we thought it was. We may even be able to imagine not needing to return to it in the future.
In either case, taking a break helps restore perspective. It helps clarify our current relationship with whatever we’re taking a break from, and thus can give us the proper frame of reference for when, if at all, it comes time to resume.
