Coach John Wooden has been quoted as saying, “You will never outperform your inner circle.” And there’s a reason he said this. Whether we like it or not, the people we choose to be closest to will have a profound impact on the person we become. We just have to look around and we’ll see this is the case.
The question isn’t whether the people we’re closest to will have an impact—that’s pretty clear. The question is, What kind of person do I want to become? Because once we know that, then it’s a matter of whether or not we’ll choose to spend time with the people who will influence us in that direction.
