I recently heard an interview with Dayton Moore, General Manager of the Kansas City Royals. What’s been the secret of the team’s incredible success the past couple years? According to Moore, one key component was focusing on the process and not the outcomes.
Instead of making winning their division or the World Series the primary aim, the team learned to focus on getting better each day. The thought was that if they stuck with the process, continuing to improve day after day, the results would eventually take care of themselves. And now, after years of hard work, they are reaping the benefits of sticking with it.
Goals are helpful. But even more important is what we do along the way. Will we choose to continue to grow and develop? Because if we commit to doing so, the outcomes will eventually come. And who knows, they may even exceed what we even thought — all because we never stopped growing.
