It’s amazing what you’ll get done when you don’t have a choice.
When we don’t have to do something, it can be easy to put it off until later. But when we have to do it, we somehow get it done, whether we feel like it or not__.__
It’s like telling yourself you need to clean out the basement, but it never gets done. At least not until you sell your house and it’s time to move. Then suddenly what had been postponed for years gets done in a matter of days.
Knowing that necessity is the ultimate motivator can be useful. I know one friend who will intentionally sign up to speak on a topic he knows little about because it will force him to actually learn about it for his talk.
Putting yourself in a position where you have to do what you’ve been putting off may be an extreme way of getting it done—but it’s also very effective.
