In the past, I’ve heard some people say they hope they never have to move because they don’t want to deal with packing up and transporting all their stuff. And now, after a few years of marriage, and a couple kids, I’m beginning to understand why they may feel that way.

It’s so easy for things to accumulate. And the more stuff that accumulates, the more difficult (or time consuming or expensive) it can be to actually move on.

The same dynamic can happen in other areas of life. Holding on to stuff — especially the past — can keep us from moving ahead into the future. And although it’s easy to see how this could happen if we hang on to things like bitterness or resentment or unforgiveness, we can also be affected by hanging on too tightly to the success of yesterday — something that also can keep us from moving ahead.

When it’s time to move ahead, the fewer things we have to carry with us, the quicker and easier it will be. And this applies not just when switching residences, but also in embracing whatever realities tomorrow may bring.
